An 18th century silver and twisted whale bone punch ladle.
Made circa 1780. Length 15" (38cm).
This type of ladle is never hallmarked. The bowl is raised from a sterling silver coin and the writing that would have been on the edge of the coin is left, so that it can been seen on the edge of the bowl, therefore confirming that it is made from a silver coin. Often another coin will be inserted in the base to help give weight and interest to the piece. The date of the inserted coin is always earlier than when the item was made. The date on the inserted coin for this ladle is 1758. The handle is made from twisted whale bone and capped with silver.
