Evald Johannes Nielsen (1879 – 1958) was born on 5th June in Stubbekobing, Denmark.
At the tender age of eight, Evald’s father, a coach-builder had a serious accident smashing his knee.
Consequently he went bankrupt and lost his workshop. Six years later in 1893 he died leaving the family in poverty.
Fortunately Evald was able to find work as an apprentice in the silversmithing workshop of August Fleron in Copenhagen.
After he finished his apprenticeship seven years later, Evald left Copenhagen and worked as a journeyman in Germany, France
and Switzerland. He also visited the World Exhibition in Paris, which inspired him to open his own workshop
In 1905 Evald Nielsen was back in Copenhagen where he opened a retail shop with the basement as his workshop.
In 1913 he was made a member of the Goldsmiths Guild of Copenhagen and by 1914 was employing fourteen craftsmen.
In 1918 Nielsen was made Master of the Guild, where he engaged in organising a union to defend the rights of employees.
The Dansk Guldsmedemesterforening (The Union of Danish Goldsmiths) was founded in 1920.
Unlike Georg Jensen who used many designers, Evald Nielsen’s designs were all his own,
and you can even see in these candelabras influences that were adopted by the Jensen workshop.
