The Eccentric Club
The Eccentric Club is a gentleman’s club and was formed in London c.1780.
It served as a meeting point for many great and original minds; pioneers of thought in artistic, literary, theatrical, scientific, legal and political circles.
Providing an amicable environment for their recreational and creative pastime as well as a testing ground for the novel and controversial theories.
Some notable names that have been members of the club are: His Majesty King George IV, HRH Prince Charles of Wales (His Majesty King Charles III),
HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Hugh Lowther (The ‘Yellow’ Earl of Lonsdale), F.E.Smith (The Earl of Birkenhead), Charles Stanhope (The Earl of Harrington),
Frederick Hervey (The Marquess of Bristol) &Alexander Thynn (The Marquess of Bath).
The club’s motto is: Nil Nisi Bonum, meaning ‘Nothing But Good’.
The backwards running clock, showing 4 o'clock, carried by an owl, is the iconic symbol of the club and its official logo.
