Review - Lyon & Turnbull Fine Silver Sale

Unfortunately there were only a few items of Provincial flatware on offer at this sale, with no rare or top quality spoons. I therefore felt that none of the items on offer warranted an individual review.

I will leave it to the editor, space permitting, to decide which items of flatware are included in this report with the hammer prices realised.

268.A late 16th/early 17th century silver slip top spoon, London, top mark worn, lion passant and date letter at base of stem, both part worn, leopard's head crowned in bowl, engraved, 'S.C' on slip top. 15.2cm, 2oz. £400-600.480
269.A late 17th century parcel gilt seal top spoon, London 1671, maker's mark of Stephen Venables, date letter and maker's on stem, leopards head crowned in bowl, oval bowl, hexagonal stem, knopped finial engraved 'W over NM'. 16.5cm, 2oz. £400-600.420
276.A pair of early Victorian novelty parcel-gilt berry spoons, Sheffield 1846, by William Wheatcroft Harrison, with British Registration mark for 15th August 1846, oval bowls, embossed with fruit and foliate decoration, twisted stems and figural terminals. The figures are modelled as Pickwick and Sam Weller of 'The Pickwick Papers' by Charles Dickens. 2oz. £200-300.300

'Famine or Feast' !
During the last few months there would appear to have been a dearth of rare and top quality Scottish provincial flatware on offer around the auction houses in Scotland. One could describe it as having been a period of Famine!

Now for a period of Feast! or at least two consecutive days of feasting over some rare and hopefully top quality flatware.

Lyon and Turnbull of Edinburgh, are offering for sale on the 20th August, A Private Collection of Fine Silver and Sheffield Plate. Announced at their recent sale as 'The Murray Collection', this sale will be offering several important Scottish Provincial pieces. Having had a few minutes preview, of some of the items on offer, I would suggest that there promises to be a choice offering of some good flatware and a few items of superb hollowware from Scottish provincial towns. Also, there were many quality items of English origin including some rare and early spoons. I hope that a list of some of the items to be offered will be available before this article goes to press.

Recently I also contacted Bonhams in Edinburgh but unfortunately they were unable, at the time, to provide me with any information as to flatware that may be offered in their August sale. If the previous three years sales can be regarded as a guide, they too should have some choice items on offer at their high profile Scottish sale.
